Parts in common with other makes?
Been around two breakers the past week, no RWD cars, a single 850 being the sole Volvo representative. I guess that says a lot in itself about the marque?
But, looking at all those lesser vehicles, I imagine there must be some parts in our cars that were in others? Possibly engine management, fuel system (Bosch components) sensors etc? I've searched this and other forums to no avail. Does anyone have any useful info? All gratefully received. |

good luck... ignition and fuel injection components are compatible with some porsche models (not many of them in the wreckers....)
Differentials are compatible with Jeep SUVs with Dana diffs would you believe. Not sure what else, if any... |

I've seen a lot of similar but not compatible parts due to size differences with other Motronic cars of the era. These are the injectors and other Bosch sensors that were mentioned. It's possible to use non-Volvo branded parts by using the Bosch part number when sourcing replacements though.
The 960 autobox is also similar but not compatible with certain Toyotas since it's produced by Aisin Warner. Solenoids are different, anyway and it appears that Volvo used their own TCM. Other than that I suppose there's the power radio. That one is an off the shelf component by Hirschmann. |

If you get the volvo PN or the Bosch PN you can search the internet / ebay and find the same items, they tend to be cheaper by mfr PN, knowing the application puts the price up.
I got a brand new bosch idle control valve advertised for a Saab for £70, and a new Bosch external pressure pump where the seller didn't know what it was for, for £50. Breather O-rings for about 80p each. Having the Vida CD helps with Volvo PN, then you can find various web sites that show equilavents. I work in manufacturing and often thought it would be really useful to have our own AML (approved manufacture list) system. Volvo PN to Mfrs PN (maybe even some deduced drawings/specs). Really useful for strandard things like seals, bearings, pipes etc. There is, what looks like, an ERP system on my Synology NAS but no idea how to get working, or if that would cover it. Maybe a simpler database package would do it, as I wouldn't try and put the BOM (bill of materials) as this is a complex model structure and already on Vida. PN list much easier. |

On the 7xx models with ABS, the front sensors are the same as Mk3 Cavalier front and Rover 800 rear sensors. The plugs may be different but it's possible to change the plugs.
That said, try getting any of those sensors out of their donor vehicles! Unless you're very lucky, it won't happen! Not really found any other generic parts that are shared with a lot of other cars sadly.

If you have a K-jet system some of the parts are compatible with older Porsche, Saab and VW models. Wheels are Ford pattern but not Ford offset.

On a similar note, the plugs are pretty common, NGK BCPR6ES covers most of the 7/9xx but there are a few models that need something very slightly different.
http://www.ngkpartfinder.co.uk/partfinder.php The older 740s with the distributor mounted on the side of the block used a very common Bosch cap and rotor arm, Ford, Vauxhall and umpteen others used it as well. That was on the B20/23 engines and not the B200/230 engines though.
