Auto or Manual?
Hello
A bit of advice please from anyone who can help. I’m been looking for a 940 estate for a while and found the perfect car but it’s an auto. Should I be put off by this? Any major problems? Expensive to fix? Please excuse my ignorance but I’m not the slightest bit mechanically minded, I just love old Volvo estates Thanks in advance. Cheers |

I love auto Volvos.
My first auto was a 1989 240 GLT estate. Had 159,410 miles on when bought. Owned 10 years now. Was my daily driver for 8 years. It's an AW 70/71. Only issue has been a worn gearbox output bearing/seal. Leaking ATF. Needed a used tail output bearing at around 210,000miles. Cost £400 as needed prop centre bearing replaced as well as gearbox cross member and mount. Also needed the gearbox atf pipes to the rad replaced as holed at the clip. £50 each from Volvo. Apart from changing ATF fluid no issues. Now on 237,000miles. Around 18 months ago bought a 1996 940 SE LPT automatic for £250 and no issues at all with the gearbox. Now on nearly 196,000 miles. Flushed the ATF using the sump dump approach and no issues. The AW70/71 is a long liver so long as you change the fluid. Pull out the dipstick and see the colour, should be pink and not brown. Smell and if burnt smell not good. If the cars cooling rad has not been changed fit a new nissens rad as gearbox cooler goes through the coolant rad so if hole inside engine coolant can get into gearbox. James |

As 'volvo always' points out, the coolant and the ATF can cross-contaminate if the internal radiator fails. We had this on our long term ownership 745, but were fortunate in that a new rad and coolant and ATF flushes solved the problem with no long term damage. A couple of other quick points: I think the four speed autos are 'smoother' than the three speeders, and if you envisage towing anything more than a camping trailer it pays to fit a separate ATF cooler to supplement the 'in-rad' item. Regards, John.
