Really hopefully the problem isn't a head gasket but the garage will have a coolant tester to detect exhaust products and that would be a sure proof.

If it is to do with the regeneration of the DPF, the problem stems from Volvo adopting a DPF system which burns out the filtered carbon particles by having the fuel injectors inject fuel into the cylinders on the exhaust stroke, sucking unburnt diesel into the exhaust where it burns in the filter housing. Unfortunately some of the unburnt fuel in the cylinders is scavenged by the piston rings and ends up in the sump. The piston scavenging is designed to deal with lubricating oil in the cylinders and that causes no problems being put back into the sump from whence it came, but diesel fuel shouldn't be in the sump and after a lot of filter regeneration the sump level can rise 30% which is why Volvo rechristened the 75% mark as "Full" leaving 25% space for misplaced diesel fuel. This dilutes the lubricating oil, thinning it so that more of it gets past the piston rings and is burnt in the cylinders on the compression stroke. Whether that causes pale smoke in the exhaust I do not know but I do worry about what it does to the lubricating properties of the oil in the sump! Volvo don't like to talk about this simplistic workaround of a basic design problem in their DPF system. I'm not surprised.

Hi at 145000 miles the engine should still be fine. My previous V70 P2 had that sort of milage when I bought it and was in VGC. After using it for a couple of years and milage up to 165000 it occasionally ( three occasions) smoked ,white smoke at low speeds for short periods with no apparent drop in oil level . This usually occured if it idled while still cold for a few minutes but took a few miles of driving for it to burn off .I decided that as the engine or possibly the turbo seals may have slight wear to change the oil to a 10/40 semi synthetic . Never had any more smoking and kept car up to 185000 still running fine. A mate bought it and kept it up to 240000 with a few long trips to south of France with no problems. He sold it on still running well with no smoking problems.
I also add two stroke oil to the fuel at a 200:1 mix at every fill . This prevents the DPF from clogging in the first place by burning the soot during combustion. I would recommend this and I still use it in my current p3 V70 that runs very well . If you do decide to try the two stroke oil you must use normal mineral , low ash, self mix oil and NOT the synthetic variety. About 325ml to a tank full or the appropriate amount every fill .It will also make the engine smoother and quiter . It won't do any harm even f you over dose it . A decent 2s oil is available from Morrison's at £2 for 500ml . It can be found cheaper at motor factors but usually has to be bought in much larger quantities.

Thanks all. I am going to make a doc with this advice on it. The puffs of smoke situation seems to have sorted itself out (it's possible that the night I drove home in too low a gear for a couple of miles on the bypass while absorbed in thought about this problem actually contributed to correcting it.)

Just to make my life and the car's happier, yesterday some silly woman drove into the back when I was static in a traffic queue. With three terrific whacks. The main damage seems to be to the bumper, but though I have been in "scrapes" before in my life I have never been hit hard like that - I don't think any lasting harm is done, but it's very shaking.

Now waiting for insurance estimate on replacement bumper/bumper cover. Happily the car is still sound and driveable.

Grr!
