aux belt change interval?
I'm about to acquire a 2012my (1st reg march 2012) XC70 D5 215 to replace my 2008 D5 185 model. (couldn't resist it)
it has 47k on the clock with the last service i believe in march at 45K - the dealer (indy) has said he'll service it, but I am trying to understand the aux belt change interval for this 2012 model...I think is 54k (same as the 2008) - is this correct? (sorry if this has been done before but search I could only find specific posts relating to the 2008-2010 my's) |

Volvo now change their aux belts at the same time as they change the timing belt at a recommended 120K miles but in 2012 they recommended this interval for the aux belt but 150K for the timing belt. See https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rc...__ZC2CtQBwJ8Vg Seems a little peculiar as the aux belt is far less critical than the timing belt and even if changed at 120K is likely to be changed again at 150K when it comes off when the timing belt is changed. Obviously since 2008 belt design has improved!

Are you sure? My D5 twin turbo (205) , 2010, was originally specified at 108k but subsequently recalled for a 54k interval.

Secondly , The Aux belt is MORE critical than the cam belt , Volvos cambelts are rock solid in reliability . Thirdly , since 2008 the Aux Belts are weaker as were their tensioners , this coincides with the engine being made in the FORD factory in Bridgend !

Didn't the tensioner cause problems with the aux belts ?.

I second the 54,000 miles OR 5 years interval on the aux belt. Mine was changed at 5 years despite only having done 45,000 miles, don't forget the idlers as its this that fails shredding the belt and sometimes alowing the bits to get behind the cover and cause the cam belt to jump a tooth or two. If you are unfortunate enough to have it happen bills of £2000 are not uncomen and sometimes £8000 for a new engine.
Given the possible consequences it's not a service item I would ignore and would do early rather than late. As my milage is less than 10,000 a year in the Volvo I change on time not milage unless something happens and I suddenly have a dramatic increase in milage it will be changed again at 10 years along with the cam belt. yes they tried 3 different tensioners then reverted back to the second type with 54000 mile belt change , The belts could break too with the third type when starting the engine ! Volvo had perfectly rugged everlasting Aux belts and tensioners on the 850 , then they design some rubbish which takes 5 years and goodness knows how many £ millions to sort out . It would be interesting to know how much Ford input there was on this . The tensioner certainly looked like nothing volvo had used before , the materials were zinc plated , like a lot of ford parts are .

Secondly, The criticality is more about what happens if the belt fails, not its alleged reliability Thirdly, Volvo already made the allowance in reduced change times, refer to the first point. If I'm wrong and you are right, why do Volvo publish an all models maintenance schedule with the intervals that I quoted? I understand that the schedule is for USA cars but since when are our conditions worse than theirs? In the circumstances, perhaps the OP should ask Volvo Support.

Hi
thanks for the replies. and confirming that it remains at 54k interval. I was aware that there had been various 'attempts' to improve the aux belt on this engine and didn't know if the upgraded 2 turbo version had it sorted for a longer life. Happy to stick with 54k interval and budget accordingly. Tatsfield - in re-reading the linked doc that you kindly put up, I think that the North American market only offered petrol engines (I stand to be corrected here) as the doc refers to 'gasoline' and no ref to diesel. regards |

I have the same engine as you Jonny (MY12 215ps D5), it's definitely 54,000 for aux belts and 108,000 for cambelt as others have said (I asked the very same questions and did a lot of reading on it myself earlier this year). The cambelt (or more specifically, tensioners) is also the weaker link, again as Clan and others have said.
FWIW when I got my car at 69,000 miles, the dealer confirmed the aux belt HADN'T been changed because the previous owner hadn't requested it (it's not actually on the service schedule, you have to ask for it to be done) so I got it done myself to be on the safe side. It'll be done again at 108,000 along with the cambelt, no point taking any chances, these seem to be consumable / lifed items, not worth the risk of potentially destroying the engine...
