Default 18" wheels vs 17"...

I recently swapped my nice but getting elderly 2004 S80 for an especially gorgeous 2012 S80 Executive D5. All is fine and dandy, more or less, and I'm particularly enjoying the vastly improved engine refinement of these later models.

One thing that dose irk is the road noise which spoils the otherwise serene ride. On smooth tarmac its fine, but on the coarse chip stuff that seems to be everywhere its an irritating din. It has 18" rims with Michelin primacy Sport 3 tyres. I'm considering swapping for 17" rims and 50 profile tyres.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

It's more likely to be the tread pattern rather than the tyre profile. Does your new S80 have wider tyres than your old one?

Try a softer eco tyre rather than a firm sports tyre, might make all the difference!

My used V70 came with some right old cr*p on them: not even mid-range tyres but horrid, cheap rubbish. I opted for Hankook Optimo 4 season and the ride was transformed - obviously a better carcass and better tread pattern make a world of difference.

All tyres now have various ratings including noise (admittedly that's an external noise measurement) but it's worth checking.

I have recently changed the wheels on my V60 and have a very nice set of 17" Njord Alloy Wheels looking for a new owner if you do decide to go to 17 inch wheels. Regards Pete

Looking for £325.00, wheels are in excellent condition 2 of the wheels have very very minor kirb marks/scuffs, tyres are reasonable 2 have 6mm of tread and 2 have 3mm remaining all even wear volvo centre caps are included.
