Iphone contacts

Can anyone help me with this? When my iphone is paired to my Sensus Connect system, the contacts list is huge - including (in grey) all the email contacts from my phone.
All I want to see is the contacts with phone numbers.
Can I refine this?
It has been the same on my iphone, 4, 5, 6 and now 7.

You need to limit the contacts list on your iPhone to specific contacts only. For example, I use Google Mail and Google Contacts to manage my email and contacts. I set up my Apple contacts to sync with Google contacts only.

If you don't limit the list of contacts on your iPhone then your contacts address book is going to be very large.

You should also stop applications on your iPhone synching contacts automatically.

If you are running iOS 10 on your iPhone then try this:

1. Go to Settings --> Contacts

2. Check which app your contacts are synced with by looking at what is listed under 'Accounts' - this will be your first clue as to how you Contacts list is managed on your iPhone

3. Click on Accounts

4. You will now see a list of apps under Accounts that will sync various things on your iPhone

5. Underneath each of these apps (e.g. iCloud, Gmail, etc - your list may vary) there will be a list of which attributes are synced

6. One or more of these will list Contacts. Others may list Email, Calendar, etc

7. The apps which sync your Contacts are the ones adding to your Contacts list. You can click on any of these apps and select/deselect Contacts syncing

8. This will take effect immediately. Now check the Contacts list on your iPhone to verify it is now limited to those contacts you want to see listed

9. The next time your iPhone connects to Sensus in your Volvo, the updated list of Contacts will be sent to your car. This may take a few minutes.

Personally, I find using Google Contacts (part of Gmail) is the best way to manage contacts. I simply use my desktop to log on to Gmail and manage my contacts in there. My iPhone, Mac and iPad are set to sync contacts with Gmail only so my list of contacts is very manageable. I also disallow any other apps on my computer, tablet or phone to sync to Contacts.

Thanks Taz. I have changed the settings within my Settings, Contacts and limited so that the only contacts are from my Exchange account. I have unchecked the email option from all my accounts (including Exchange) so hope that that has sorted it.

Your help is much appreciated and I will update the post after it has re-synced on my way to work in the morning!

Did you uncheck Email or Contacts for the other apps for syncing? You should uncheck Contacts.

Yes I did. The only account with contacts checked is Exchange.

So if you go into Contacts on your iPhone now, do you see only the contacts you want to see?

No. that didn't work.
On the iPhone I have iCloud, Exchange, Gmail and Yahoo accounts and the only account with contacts is Exchange.
When I view contacts on my phone I can select which group it displays and have that set to Contacts.
When it syncs with the car, it seems to push All Exchange (so it seems to include everyone I have ever sent or received emails from) and I want it just to show me Contacts.

Yes, that's how it will work. It will push all of your contacts in Exchange. You need to have an app on your iPhone that has your 'real' contacts in it and then select that for Contacts sync only.

Hence, I use Gmail contacts as it's easy to manage online and works perfectly.

There's no easy way to restrict the Exchange group of contacts (or from any other app) when it syncs with your car. Ironically, it's a lot easier if you have an Android phone!

The entire list you see on your iPhone is exactly what will be synced to your car. Hence, if you can find an app that manages your contacts well (again, I use Gmail) then you can control that list and it works better for syncs to your car.
