I might just take this to my Volvo specialist to investigate because it seems like there's a lot of different things that may be the cause.

As for taking it to a garage, fair play. It may well be the best way out if the cause of the knocking isn't obvious. Dave..

A decent size pair of Mole grips should work.

Hi StatusRed,
This diagram shows the various components that relate to the front strut. https://www.volvopartswebstore.com/s...rimLevel=24667 I don't have a whole strut dismantled in front of me, but I am pretty sure that you should NOT undo that top nut until the spring is compressed with a spring compressor. That is usually done when the whole strut has been removed from the car. ** I may be dreaming, but I think that if you do, the spring will tear the top rubber (part 7 in the diagram) and the whole thing may spring dangerously apart.** If you have an air impact gun and the right socket, it is fairly easy to undo the top nut without worrying about a counterhold. If you don't have the right tools, I suggest taking the car to a Volvo specialist who should be able to work out what is going on. That may or may not involve the strut at all. Hope that helps, Steve

Hi StatusRed
Yes, you're right if the wheel is on the ground, but it is not a good idea if it wasn't. I was just a bit worried there. Steve

The top not doesn't hold the spring. Under the large washer is another cross nut that holds the spring under tension. You would need to undo the top nut to remove the whole strut and spring from the car! As long as the car is on the ground, you can actually undo both nuts if you wanted for inspection purposes.
You want a good adjustable spanner on the flat and a well fitting spanner on the nut. It will come undone with the right tools!!

Front Strut
Quote:
In every strut set up I have dismantled there is only one nut, which is the one at the very top. This can be removed for inspection purposes without using a spring compressor, providing that the weight of the car is kept on the wheel. The complete strut/spring assembly can be removed without using a compressor providing the top nut is not touched, but will be needed for disassembly/assembly.

Yes you are quite right, if that cross nut is not there! It has been too long since I did one! My apologies. Maybe the C70 didn't have the cross nut. Although that cross nut is on every 850 and v70 I've come across and needs to be removed as well as the top nut I believe!
