Default Unusual device in speedometer cable

Ok my 122s there is a round black device - about 2 inches diameter - with the speedo cable clamped on the input and the output. It has three terminals on the side of it but nothing is wired to it. I can only think it is converting a circular motion to an electrical signal. Has anyone any idea what it is?
Is there any way I can put a photo on here?

Tf;

I was under the impression that a Halda(sp?) Speedpilot used for Distance/Time calculations in rallyeing used a speedocable hookup for the distance input, but if yours got elec connections, I imagine as C1800 notes, its still some sort of input for an instrument. Pix should help...

Cheers

In the 70s there were various aftermarket fuel computers marketed and if memory serves correctly, one of them used a device that fitted onto the speedo cable, hence three terminals. One was the +ve feed, second was earth (ground for our USA cousin) and the third was the signal for the "black box" that did the work.

I believe there were also aftermarket cruise control kits that relied on similar devices attached to the speedo cable and also trip computers that used them.

As for photos, i use postimages.org and the "Hotlink for forums" link, easily copied by clicking the blue button at the end of the link then just paste it where you want the photo to appear.

Many thanks for all the above. In all the info I got with the car is a letter about an entry in the Monte Carlo Rally so this device could well have been used for rallying. Thanks everyone.

I'd go with Rons suggestion then, that it was used for the rally.. Nice to have a genuine souvenir like that!

Thanks for that. It's exactly like that and I now believe it's for measuring distance.
