D5244T12 vs D5244T20 Engine Differences?
I know there are a few threads but there never actually seems to be any definite answer both are D5 engines but one makes 181bhp the other 220bhp? apart from the 40bhp I am wondering what physical components are different they even both make the same torque. Looking around some people say they are competently different others say its a detuned version of the 220bhp engine. Looking at remaps it does seem that the 181 can make the same power as the 220 making me think they are the same as if the turbo for example was bigger would the 220 not make more?
A bit confused to be honest as not alot of information on the D5244T12 but loads on the D5244T20. |

Isn't it the turbos that differ, single v twin?
Know my 175bhp D5 is a twin turbo 205bhp D5 with a single turbo. Polestar optimisation has brought it up to 195 bhp while the same polestar optimisation gives the 205 225bhp, so some of it is physical some electronic. Paul. |

They are the same.
When the new VEA engines came out, as the D4 primarily, Volvo never matched them up with the AWD transmission in P3 platform cars. In order to offer a lower-priced AWD option (the D4 AWD), they simply software-restricted the D5. As you rightly say, remapping yields the same. They've done this a few times over the years, with a 163bhp (T16/T17) restricted version of the 205 (T10), then 181 and 190 (T12) restricted versions of the 215/220 (T15/T20). GreenVanMan has the single-turbo gen 3, D5244T14, which does differ from the contemporary D5 (and was typically sold as 2.4D or DriveE in the XC60). |

I asked this question when looking at the XC70 I bought.
From what research I could glean I confirmed the D4 AWD 181 has the same twin turbos as the D5. I couldn’t confirm any other specific component differences bar software ones. The Polestar upgrade on the D4 gives a massive boost compared with that for the D5 which further confirms the similarities. Just a shame you can’t further upgrade the Polestarred D4 to that of a Polestarred D5. To my mind the prices of D4 AWD 181 compared with D5 with the T20 engine makes them a bit of a bargain.

Thank you for all the help as said I have read quite a few threads and afterr the above I think they are the same engine just detuned going looking at a 2016 D4 XC70 thats taken my fancy I wouldn't mind one of the new XC90's but think there out of my price range for the spec I want.
