I have an 11 month old XC60 auto which has started to roll back when waiting at halt signs or traffic lights on a hill should this happen or should it hold itself.

You should always have your foot on the brake or the EPB engaged when stationary - both of these will stop it rolling backwards. The gearbox is not designed to hold the car on a hill. It will hold the car briefly on a hill between you releasing the brake pedal and the drive engaging, but this is momentary.
