A quote I found "The rear main seal is a 2 piece felt seal, with another felt seal behind it. They fit in a housing that bolts to the rear of the block and pan, according to the parts diagram I have."

Also found this pic. Not much help as I can't interpret the dimensions written at the bottom. The 2 part numbers are for the top and bottom alloy supports.

Gasket kit is from CVI. It shows the wooden side seals, 2 flat seals and 2 curved seals. Possibly the 2 flat seals fit in the wide grooves and the 2 curved ones in the narrower ones. Does that sound right?
There are also 2 tiny gaskets that fit each side between the 2 halves.

Yes, I have all this. BTW where would the engine number be stamped? Would it be one of these numbers?

Pistons cleaned up ready for new rings. In a perfect world with deep pockets I would have had a rebore and new pistons. The gap for rings in bores should be between 0.25 & 0.50. the new ring gap is 0.30

Success at last. Took the engine block to a friends garage and impact gun made short work of big nut.

What does your mechanic say about the camshaft damage. From photo, it appears that your lobes are much better than the ramps, which have all kinds of pitting. Is that pitting associated with impact damage?

For your own interest I would take a set of pics as it is now and then polish off all of the burnt residue and the take more pics. Then you can take measurements to see what it's really like. Yes there looks to be quite a lot of damage. I'm not sure if you are getting some new lifters from the USA or you are getting yours refaced. Fit and finish of the lifter bores is the first critical inspection. As I said previously I think that the faces are fractionally angled or domed to encourage rotation and this is worth checking and discussing with the machining shop if that is the way you are going. Really needs a cam grinder who understands the needs. At least you could ask one of them for advice. Try Kent Cams here in the UK (dealer http://www.lugo.pt/). Maybe get some proper cam lube from them for the initial run in process. 30 minutes at 2000 rpm.

Yes I had the faces refaced and polished, not possible to obtain new. Unfortunately there are no specialists here and there is a limit to what I can achieve here. Also, my pockets are not as deep as they used to be. Have the cam lube ready and waiting.
