Default 1973 Daf 66

Hi all,

long time lurker, first time poster.

I am looking to find a manufacturing date for my 1973 daf 66. as volvo purchased DAF, would volvo be the right people to contact?

To cut a long story short, the date of first registration on the vehicle is april 1973, so if it was built more than 4 months earlier I may be able to change the taxation class to historic/tax exempt

Thanks for your time.

Hi,

Welcome to (posting on) the forum.

Volvo in Sweden can supply key codes for Volvos from your VIN/chassis number.

Try Global Customer Relations: gcr@volvocars.com

However, Volvo didn't own DAF (cars) then so it depends what records were transferred.

Of course, DAF is still going strong as a truck manufacturer. Have you tried their head office? A bit doubtful, but it has to be worth a try.

Any pictures of your DAF? Is is saloon, coupe or estate? Or a Marathon (I think that's what they called the one with the go-faster stripes).

Good luck

John

Of course, I meant to say build date, not key code! (Just being lazy and cutting and pasting from another post)

What are your plans for the car?

Cheers

you should try the Daf owners club, very active and enthusiastic:
http://www.dafownersclub.co.uk/
Was that on ebay a few weeks ago, it looks like one I saw in Herne Bay that I was going to go for and then stupidly forgot!

Hi Torsten,

Yes it is the one from Herne Bay, Was not expecting a lot of car for the princely sum of 35 pounds, but she is in a lot better condition that I thought. Only apparent mechanical issues so far are some sticky brakes, as it has been sitting for a few years

She has come up a treat with some t-cut.

I even found a field mouse nest, complete with a very long dead mouse under the back seat.

Somebody has had a very bad attempt at touching up the odd scratch with cherry red paint.

I intend to use her as my day to day motor after giving her a long-overdue service!

Amazingly well built cars these, just a shame that no one really loves them apart from the select few, in case you've not had one before make sure that the MOT tester understands them, if they use the rolling road brake tester it will snap the drive belts!

It won't snap the belts they are very robust and two of them running in parallel ! But yes it is a good idea not to use the rollers due to the transmission drag , It's the DAF 55 with the lack of Differential which must not be used on the rollers .

My second car was a daf 55 marathon 1972 with the silver stripe along the side. What I remenber was it was very well made, faster than folk expected, great in the snow and very quiet at motorway speeds. Enjoy your 66. I once tried to buy a 66 marathon coupe.
All the very best.

Try the Daf Club in Holland. On their website there is an "Email" section, send it to the "Technische Commissie" or the "Magazijn", they might know more.

The Daf 66 was introduced in september 1972.
