Default 1.4 problems

My 1985 1.4 dl went from running fine to having real problems overnight. its hard to get started and when you do get it going it stuggles to idle and its really shakey and rough. if the revs aren't kept high the car cuts out. i took the air filter off and tightend eveything up. this didn't fix it. i started it up with the air filter off and the carb backfires. any help with whats wrong and how to fix it would be really appreciated. thanks

As Dai mentions, there is quite a lot of information on this subject at volvo300mania.com

There are a number of things it's likely to be, including a vacuum leak and a failed idle solenoid. I had dirt the idle solenoid a couple of times, too.

cheers

James
