Question Silicon sealant around runroof

Has anyone tried putting sealant around the sunroof to stop this incessant problem with water ingress? I have sorted the drain for now but god knows when it will happen again. I am sure that I read somewhere that putting sealant around the sunroof will solve the problem. It can easily be stripped off if necessary.

Thanks

Brian

I dont have a sunroof on mine but I had a leak issue on the front windscreen top part on the passanger side. Initially i used duck take and then sealent and thought it did the job pretty well.

Silicone sealent is meant for your bathroom, not car. It will eat through the paint. Do some research to make sure this will not happen with the sealent you use.

Can you order genuine replacement rubber seals?

It's nothing to do with the rubber seals, it's because of the way the water drains down through the side channel (where the airbag is) and then through a stupid rubber thing and out to the outside (hopefully). The main problem is this rubber thing. It's a common problem with the V50 (and maybe other Volvo's with sun roofs. Other car makes also have a problem with sunroof drains.

that would be why the documented fix on here ,, is on here
no need to be a muppet and use sealant on it when it is fixed Correctly.
why bodge and ruin the car when the fix is really cheap, easy and simple to do....

Thanks for calling me a muppet! Very mature. Cheap, easy and simple to do? I assume by your arrogance that you have done this! Tell me how! Believe me, I have tried all of the 'simple/easy' fixes and they haven't worked for me. But then, being a muppet is probably why. I always thought that this forum was the best, alway giving me good, 'sensible' help. I have done with you and your 'expert' advice. Have a 'nice' day. You won't see me on this forum again.

being an old git when sunroofs always leaked in the winter never the summer it was either tape or frame sealer to get you out of trouble and wait to fix it in the summer silicon sealant was not around then or if it was was too expensive , summer comes and the biggest pain was cleaning up the mess from tape/ sealant , no idea if silicon attacks paint

I think I speak for everyone when I say it's a shame you've had your feelings hurt. I think this is a great place to get advice still so don't be put off. I'm not defending the comments, but speaking more generally, it's best to have a thick skin and not take it to heart. Why be upset by what a stranger writes on a forum right, life is too short.

Anyway, I did a google, is this helpful, have you tried this?

edit... if you use sealant, you will cause issues with the drainage, which will almost definitely cause pooling elsewhere and that water will either get in through the sunroof somewhere else, or collect and slowly breakdown and maybe even cause corrosion in long term. It will most likely just move the problem elsewhere. Despite them blocking and the rubber seal becoming less effective with age, the design, slope, seal and drain is designed that way for a reason. I'm certain sealant will make it worse

Best option is to remove the one way valve / sound block type thing at the bottom of the drain hose, it shouldn't get bunged back up then.

Logically is silicone would do the job, then Volvo would have just sealed it all up that way rather than fit the drains. I suppose silicone will work until you open the sunroof and flood the car.
