you need to PM the admins to do that....

...thanks for this guide, it's made me prefer to spend £50 on labour for a mechanic to do it rather than arse about doing it myself they'll have the spare rivets and clips to put everything back again.

Cool

My LHS wiper was starting to touch the bonnet when opening, the bush had definitely worn, but Volvo seemed to have changed the design of the wiper arm. So I just fitted a new arm and it improved the clearance a lot.
If you do this job there is a special socket to undo the wiper arm, although any garage will have one.

This Y tub clip shows the use of a puller to remove a stuck wiper arm for an S40:

The 13mm socket is not too common in small tool kits that are made in the far East, as Japanese cars use even numbers mostly (GM and most EU makes do use 13 mm).

13mm sockets are fairly common in socket sets, but obviously not so in Germany. Dreizehn must be an unlucky nummer.

I did this job yesterday. To save yourself some pound notes it appears to only be the spindle bracket nearest the drivers side that wears. I attempted to fill the elongated bit with epoxy which did not work so ended up swapping it with the middle one as there is much more clearance between the wiper arm and the bonnet.
For a permanent repair I'm thinking of getting some phosphor bronze sleeves, drilling out the brackets and gluing in the bushes. O.D of the wiper spindle is 12mm so I'd say 12mm ID and 15mm OD for the sleeves and some very precision drilling!

Edit: To get the ball joint off the motor linkage all you need is a pair of large-ish flat head screwdrivers, press them either side of the ball joint and it will pop off.

Default Just done this

Another update, did this job today on my '04 Classic. I sourced a new linkage from Volvo.

It seems the 'official' way to do this is to split the ball joint in the linkage closest to the wiper motor. This is different than the original photos up there ^ where the 13mm nut is removed to detach the linkage from the motor.

Leaving the lever arm attached to the motor and splitting the ball joint makes for an easier job with regards to getting everything working in alignment with the wipers sweeping the correct arc.

Just wanted to thank you guys for this info. I went over to the wreckyard over lunch and picked up a linkage. They had 4 x40's in various states of disrepair so I just went around shaking the linkages until I found one that was nice and snug.

I used the prybar method of popping out the linkage from the ball joint. You guys were not kidding you need a long prybar to get this job done. It was easy at the wreckyard when I wasn't too concerned what happened to the vehicle. It will be trickier when I remove mine at home!
