tuning box or remap

tuning box is a cheap way to see what more power feels like

-98 still has MSA15.7 ECU that needs the 2xPLCC32 chips to be removed and replaced/reprogrammed.

A tuning box for these is almost invariably a resistor in a box (aka. Evry mod), which doesn't work nearly as well as a good remap does.

Before considering a remap, I'd recommend checking the pump timing, since this has a noticeable effect on performance, and is often an issue on the old D5252T engines.

Watching with interest.

Where/who is able to do the 'proper' remap (i.e. not a 'box'), and roughly what is the cost and power gain available ?

You're a few hours drive away from us, it would be a "day trip" for you which would be the best way to do it. That way we could do the diagnostics work etc for you at the same time.
But there is an option, if you don't fancy that drive but can be without your car for a few days, you can also post your ECU to us and I can do the job for you that way too.

What does this involve ? I guess its to get the best map for the particular car ?

Checking the pump dynamic timing, doing a general diagnostics check, and doing test drives before and after to make sure the car performs as good as it possibly can.
