I think that the trouble is that people rarely compare like with like. They often expect that whatever the journey type, driving style, vehicle condition and weather they will get the manufacturers combined mpg figures.

All the best.

Roy

True, but what about the guy who was doing 70% motorway, 30% urban, and getting substantially lower than the official combined figure? It does sound like the numbers (whether Volvo's fault or not...I know they're not the only ones, and I doubt they devise the tests...) are getting cooked...

Ok, I've got an offer for you all: Since I seem to be able to routinely exceed the manufacturer's combined figure for my car, perhaps I can do the same for yours? If you're concerned about the figures for your car, I'll borrow it for a couple of days, and see if I can match them. How's that for a generous offer? What? No takers?!

cheers

James

Hi James

It's still possible to do 70% motorway and 30% urban and get bad fuel consumption. Just drive too close to the guy in front so you have to keep braking all the time.

I take it that offer isn't to me? I get above the manufactures figures normally. I thought it was impossible to get the XC90 D5 auto below 28 mpg, but recently I've been driving back and forth to the local builders merchants (about 2 miles) a lot to buy building materials and I've managed to record an all time low of 24.6. I usually get 37 to 40 mpg! Goes to show.

All the best.

Roy

I can drive your car if you want, Roy, but I don't think you need my assessment, based on your numbers

cheers

James
