Default 2013 V40 won’t start

Hi all.
Completely out of the blue, and on the way for a service I stopped at some traffic lights, the stop/start shut the engine off then when I pushed the clutch in to restart there was nothing. Thankfully on a small bridge so managed to roll round the corner in to car park where I got recovered from.
Mechanic plugged it in and said there’s some immobiliser issue, but no such warnings on the dash. The check engine light was on. Nothing doing on pressing start though, no crank, no noises, no nothing. Electrics all working fine on the face of it, windows, screens etc. Tried a spare key and disconnected the battery for 20 mins. Tried jumping it to no avail. Been running fine, stopping, starting.. all good.
Anyone have any ideas? Could it be the immobiliser? Mechanics first thought was starter?

Just an update - thankfully it was ‘just’ the starter so all replaced and working fine! Not sure why it was throwing up immobiliser codes.
