A lot of these turn up on ebay. You should be able to get one there for good money.

There are a couple on ebay, but £40 for a new pair seems like a lot to me.

Does anyone know if these bezels were generic across several car models?

I've been looking at mini parts websites to get replacement bulbs & have seen bezels that look like they would do the job.

Presumably most cars that had 7" Lucas sealed beam units used exactly the same type (both inner & outer bezel) or am I completely off the mark here?

It takes time, you should get them for a lot less than that I would have thought. I just got a front corner chrome bumper for £40 off ebay and it is absolutley mint condition. They are a lot smaller, check ebay.com and search for volvo 122.
