Unhappy XC90 - Broke Down On Me!!!!

Hi all,

My XC90 broke down on me today after owning it for just over 1 month!!

I was driving down the motorway and noticed it starting to judder - as if it was running really low on diesel (it wasn't).

I came off the motorway and it stalled and the red light came up on the dash and said something about engine management system?!

It would not start and I had to wait over 2 hours before being towed to my local Volvo dealer where I've now left it for diagnosis on Monday which won't be cheap!

Any Ideas? :-(

Fuel filter possibly, these cars are very sensitive to any slight problem in that area.

hi, a few months back my 2004 D5 auto went into limp mode and red warning light etc came up, then went back to normal and drove home, changed fuel filter (which actually requires a degree of faith in the strength of the plastic casing) and that particular problem has not returned.

My brother drove from France just after new year. Just before junc 25 on M1 his D5 cut out and MIL came on. Fault code was low fuel pressure. He has also had problems with the filter in the past, so its only a few months old. He reset the codes at the side of the road (we both carry fault code equipment in our XC90's as we're that confident in them!) and its worked fine ever since.
He has since checked the connections to his CEM, and found a couple of corroded pins, which he has cleaned and re-connected. May or may not be related to fuel issue.....
Fuel filter is definately the first thing to try. And always use decent fuel, not supermarket.

Ok cool. The car is currently at Volvo and they have said they will run a diagnostic on it which is going to cost around £100. Is it worth them doing this or should I just ask them to check the filter?

The car would not start again, is this typical of the filter or is this the computer cutting in?

Thanks for all the help!!

I'd just ask them to change the filter first if I was you, they probably know thats the problem but they're just going through the standard process ... and making money out of you

Ask them to change the filter anyway. They will have to plug in and read the codes and reset them anyway (make sure they give you a copy of what fault codes, post them on here and get opinions before doing anything other than the filter). Worthy of note, you can buy your own code reader for what they are charging. If you buy right you can use it on most modern European cars. That way you could decide for yoursef what is wrong when it happens. Once you have the fault codes read, plenty of people on the Forum can help with what to do. You will also be able to reset the fault codes. I personaly never leave home without our Autel Maxidiag EU702 code reader, that's how confident I am in modern Volvo's!
