I wish you luck but I really think you are asking far too much bearing in mind the risk any one would be taking on. After all if you can't drive it, you can't check the gearbox, 4 wheel drive, suspension, electrics etc. I still think your best bet is to get an engine put in yourself and keep it.

If you look here;

http://www.brightwellsauctions.co.uk...ultsrecent.asp

you get a better idea of what it would be worth if running. They have sold two 05s recently, one was 1 owner with 110k full Volvo history and it went for £7300. The one in the link was higher mileage but still looked good.

So, looking at it from a prospective purchasers point of view, by the time you deduct the cost of an engine and the work, and a margin for error and to make it worthwhile, I think you're looking at less than £4000, otherwise you might as well go and buy a running one.

The car has been sold for £6750. The end of a sad story :-(

Thanks for all the help and advice.

If I had had bit more time and money I'd have liked to have bought it for my daughter.

But that's a good price considering that this one went for £7300 and only needed a couple of bits of trim. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Better luck with your next car.

Roy

Oh well done Tom. I never imagined that you would get as much. I hope your bad experience hasn't put you off Volvos.

I've been driving them since 1976 and I only had one bad experience with a cracked engine block at 145k miles which cost me £1600 to replace - but I then took it to 225k miles before selling.

I've just bought my 19th Volvo.

Better luck with the next one,

Keith

I've just been speaking to a local independent garage owned by a guy about changing my cam belt in my XC90; the guy’s specialism is cam belts. He has the contract to do all the Police Volvos so I can assume he’s more than competent and a reliable source of info. I mentioned this case to him and he said on all the courses and training he's had over the years, he’s been told that, in 99.99% of the time if a cam belt fails after fitting it is not a problem with the belt but down to and error in fitting.

Tom, Surely your local garage has indemnity insurance that will cover this for you. Are you not able to approach them directly for compensation? I'm not sure how these things work but if the customer has to interface with the garage only in such a claim situation they can act like a “Rottweiler Secretary” and be obstructive. This almost negates the benefits of this insurance to the customer.... if all that makes sense!

I did think you could have bought somthing like my new V70 (£2,700) http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/vbpicg...?do=big&p=5030 and swapped the engine for yours and sold off all the other bits of it on ebay. I think that would have paid for the engine transplant.

If the Peugeot is like the Renault version watch out for puddles as the engine air intake is vunerable to taking in water and causing a catastrophic hydraulic lock. My local diesel guy has done loads of engine replacements on them because of it. He advised me the D5 was the best diesel to get.
