Towing with S80 Auto

Hi all, new boy on the block.

I have S80 D5 SE Auto and have being going through the pro`s and cons of purchasing a Caravan.

Whats the views on towing with ?
1. An automatic car
2. With the S80
Iv`e done plenty of towing but never with an automatic gearbox and am looking for pointers.

Hi,

Towing with an auto shouldn't be an issue.
Dealers recommend that if you tow regularly (and frequently) that an additional Auto box oil cooler is fitted.
Certainly the additional oil cooler will help the life of the gearbox...
Not sure what dealer charge (but it will be big £).
LankyTim has added an oil cooler to his auto from "parts" - have a look in the 900/90 tech section for his topic on this..

You may find the gears "hunting" depending on the speed you are doing.
You'll need to either lock down a gear, use economy or sport and play with the setup to find the best setup to avoid this..

Otherwise, it is so easy to drive and get around with auto..

Well cant add to the auto side because my S80 is a manual, but no problems towing my 20ft overall van 5th gear cruise on and it will stay at 60 all day. The only problem i suppose, and where an auto would be a benefit, is when pulling away from standstill mine likes to spin the wheels on all but the dryest of surfaces and care with the right foot is a must.

I tow with an Auto which is a breeze.

My current 'van is light so not fitted an extra cooler yet.
