To elaborate somewhat on CTC's reply; if you search "diesel conversion" you will find a reply by Chris Rogers containing the following info:" Rather than listing the parts needed for the swap it would be easier to list the parts you could use from the petrol car in the conversion - most of the interior should be ok except for the dash, if it's an automatic then the gear lever should be ok".
So unless you have 'scrapheap challenge' facilities to hand it's just not practicable. Good 940 diesel estates are not easy to find, but a well maintained high mileage car will turn up for £500 - £1000. These vehicles are a lot slower than the petrols but do have their own charm, principally the fact that they will do almost 40 mpg. john |

A Derv conversion will definatly outcost of getting a few 'treats' for your petrol, Either gas it or buy a diesel, If you were to not take any notice of our advise, theres a Water Damaged Diesel on ebay at the moment, Project car maybe?
Best get there quick, Ill be making him an offer for parts! Converting requires a lot of re-wiring as a lot of the diesel engines mechanics are Vacuum and mechanical (the way it should be) than electric. Off the top of my head couldnt list what you would have to do, but its too much hassle. |

Swapping in a derv engine is a lot work. I'm putting in another vote for LPG conversion

Just remember that there wern't as many cheap 940 diesels around then. I think he spent about £2500 doing it and you could buy a good 940 TD for less than that now. The 940 has improvements over the 740 as well. Roy PS might have been 10 years ago.

As much as I liked driving and towing with these 7 series with the trooper engines they would be now far from economically viable from doing due to the high price of man hours and some parts. [ There is a firm up in Cinderford called Gretton Motors Ltd who used to do convertion They are still listed but now as land rover specialists |

I think the best option is to do an LPG coversion and I would thin it be cheaper, and less work.

Sometimes you see one come up on E-bay. Getting a gearbox bell or conversion ring is the main problem. I'm sure I came accross another conversion company recently. But as much as I'm a Diesel fanatic! With the price of Diesel & the work that is involved L.P.G. is a lot easier option. 40 M.P.G. Ha, Ha. I drove like a boring old man for a week over 5yrs ago (probably nearer 10) 16 mile runs not in heavy traffic, doing no more than 50 on the dual carriageway etc. For a week & got to the dizzy heights of 38 M.P.G. out of a 1990 740TD Manual. I dont think I could get that out of my 94 940 D24TIC Auto! it would be to painful trying anyway Regards Paul. |
