I had the turtle appear a few weeks ago and the Engine check light both stayed on for half the day then dissapeared completely, no difference in performance, drove perfectly. This also happened one day last year and was a faulty sensor so as it was due for a service today I told them to check the fault codes.

2nd Service done, car is booked in for the Permanent EGR fix on 8th June when they have all the parts. Apart from also needing a new washer jet i've had absolutely no problems and car driving perfectly. I'm pleased its happened before its out of warranty as me and the service manager may have had a difficult conversation.

Full marks to Mill Volvo Stockton for a very attentive service and V60 for the day and a cracking wash and vac!.

I can't get on with LHD. I'm right handed but can I double de-clutch in a LHD ? Can I heck as like.

What is second nature in a RHD car is totally alien on the other side. Thankfully motorbikes are just normal.
I once hired a manual left hand drive car at Schiphol Airport. It was hell to drive. Quite apart from the difficulty in the gear stick being 'the wrong side', it also had a stick spring action 'the wrong way'.
Note to file. When hiring left hand drive cars, take an automatic. I never had any difficulty driving in the States.

LHD manual can be a pain (literally) when used to RHD. My initiation was at Lyon Airport on a dark, wet Sunday night many years ago. First few times I went to change gear I bashed my left hand on the driver door card...ouch!

That's usually my trick, after two days it's not unknown for there to be an indent in the door card, day three I've usually cracked it and using the right hand for gear changes.

I've had neighbours looking at my car expecting the gear shift or pedals to be the reverse of what they have in LHD cars. They think because 1st is next to their leg and they work away from themselves as they go up the gears we do the same in RHD.

Not quite the same, but used to hire a lot of automatics. One time i had the car delivered to a colleague's house - when he got to mine i took over - he was amazed you could simply put it in D - he'd been manually selecting 1/2/3/D !

Also, Avis guy came to collect - he sat on the drive for 5 mins (thought he was making a call/doing paperwork). Bell rang - he shamefully asked me to show him how to get it into reverse....

Quick update, the swallows are back under my bonnet (check engine light) managed to beat the nest away with a stick (our fitter had a snap on obd reader read code P04D9 and cleared the code) will wait and see if it comes back.

Out of interest I phoned Volvo assist again after they refused to come out last time, this time I lied and told them I had gone into limp mode, to which they replied we no longer attends V40 D4's with check lights or limp mode we just recover them straight back to dealer for EGR replacement.

I am in a foul mood at the moment so will wait until tomorrow, but will probably insist my supplying dealer collects it again so nice 320 mile round trip via low loader and hire car for 3 days

Why not just drop it at your local dealer and let them do the EGR fix and have it back same day,

I am in the process of doing this, only I am being a stubborn git about it.

Why should Volvo's long term issue affect me, and also the history of my fault.

A brief explanation, but the first time this issue occurred the local dealer gave me a 3 week waiting time, I was going into limp mode daily, after a frustrated call to them to get this looked at sooner they told me to call Volvo Assist, which I did. They attended the vehicle told me it was the EGR and that they had never seen that before and promptly booked it in the next day for me along with hire car arranged.

All very smooth, after 3 days I picked up my car to be told by the dealer it was not my EGR it was the oil level to high, okay, so I drove home and the low oil light came on, in fact the dipstick registered no oil! It was a Saturday and the dealer had shut by then, so a call to the Volvo assist who came out again and thought it strange they did not replace the EGR as it was the main fault he logged and booked in to be repaired for me.
He was shocked that no oil was displayed, even his vida showed low oil, so he topped it up with over 1.5liters this, to about 3/4 full this took him nearly an hour to do running the engine letting it cool and re-checking, I was then told to get it booked in for the EGR to be replaced.

I drove it 160 miles to Birmingham at about half way engine oil starts to be forced past the filler cap under pressure misting my windscreen with oil.......

Anyway a long sage ensued, I begrudgingly accepted the vehicle back after assurances the vehicle is fine and no long term damage was caused.

Only this was never logged in the workshop repair log I received, no mention of the over filled state, even contacting the dealer now there is no record, but they do remember me and this happening, just no record on the system...

Since then I have had another 4 visits to the dealers, my oil still continues to rise at roughly 200ml every 4 months even though I have been told it is not possible for engine oil to rise through diesel contamination on these engines.

Anyway, that was a while back, I have since had another EGR cooler fitted which I was told was the latest fix following Volvo's exhaustive testing, this has now failed.
So I have been told they have another new permanent fix that is totally reliable, although the conversation went along the lines of in the 8 weeks we have been fitting them they have been totally reliable.

Great 8-10 weeks of the new fix and we can rejoice that it is 100% reliable.

We still do not know if this will truly be a reliable fix, although it quite possibly is.

And I am still majorly upset at the massive overfill of my engine and potential long term damage that caused.

This is my 4th attempt at repair.

I do 18,000 miles a year, only use high quality fuel and do not drive for economy, all ideal conditions for a diesel, so the arguments from the dealers that its my use of the vehicle only **** me off more.
