Default Random Fault Messages

We have recently purchased a 2005 S40 with 61k on the clock.

When I picked it up, the normal service message was on and the garage didn't know how to turn it off which I accepted. They said they had serviced it, but I am going to get it serviced anyway to make sure.
I had a look on here and found out how to turn it off.

Today though, a message came up saying "Engine Service Required", and I thought it was to do with the service interval so re-set it again. But I have just read that is it more of an engine management light rather than related to servicing. There was an orange I as well appeared.

I went to my friends as he has a OBD reader so I was going to see if I could see any codes. (this didn't work as it's broke)

The main worrying bit now:
While trying to get the OBD reader to work, many other errors came up, including "Anti-Skid", "Parking Brake", there were also others too. The orange I and red ! was illuminated too. The oil, ABS lights were on too.
As the engine was running, I tried to rev the car, but nothing happened.

I turned the car off and back on, and all the errors were gone.

The car drives superb, and doesn't really feel like there is anything wrong. All the oil and fluids are spot on.

Any idea's please? We are going travelling in the car in June, so don't want to risk any break downs

Thanks a lot

I fully agree with you to be honest, but it's my girlfriends car, and she seems to love it already....I've not told her about the fault messages yet.

Although they have disappeared?

I would be worried about the electronics, random fault messages that appear and go next minute are usually a symptom of a shagged CEM or ECU, or electrical problems, corroded or loose connections, water ingress...

My friend did suggest to disconnect the battery, then unplug and re-seat all the plugs etc on the ECU, wiring loom etc.

I know it doesn't sound too good, but if there is an easy(ish) fix, I would rather try this than take the car back really.

Have a look at the plugs on the CEM under the glovebox , there are plugs on the bottom , and it hinges down after removing two thumb screws to reveal more plugs on the top .
Also check the wiring loom behind the right headlamp it can rub on or be squeezed the AC pipes , just moving the loom slightly can fix it forever .

That's great info, cheers I was going to ask where to check. Do you need to remove the glove box?

Interesting you mention the right headlamp, as the bulb got changed when I picked it up! Maybe something go knocked then!?

I hope it is something as simple as this
