Thanks for the comments guys, sounds promising.
I'll be testing most of the cars mentioned but the T5 is topping the list at the moment

Similar enough mechanically to warrant comment:

My wife owns a 2008 C30 T5 that I bought for her at 50,400 miles, and in the 20 months since then another 21,000 miles have been added.

FSH requested from the Volvo dealer that supplied and serviced the car showed only routine servicing had been done, plus a clutch release bearing recall. In our ownership all I have done other than routine servicing and a set of winter wheels & tyres is to replace both rear suspension dampers after one of the pair started to weep oil, and to refurbish all four Atreus alloys to remove minor kerbing marks. When I get time I need to fix the driver's bass speaker (it cuts out, and back in if I moderately smack the grille), but other than that, that's it.

A fantastic purchase that still puts a smile on our face each time we drive it. I hope you find similarly with a V50 T5. The 5 pot growl is addictive.

Well, we're on 71.5k miles and still on original bushes all round according to the service history. Still beautifully taught handling and impeccably even tyre wear.

I haven't tested a T5 yet but I did suspect an s/s exhaust might be needed to free up some five cylinder warble.
Hopefully we'll need the estate within a few months - I'm currently trying to decide whether to keep our 350Z too, or sell it and sink the cash into an S4
Re: the bushes, I just put Superpro bushes on the Zed and am impressed - better handling but the ride isn't any harder.
