That's nice oil! Wish Canadian eBay was like that!
I'm a big fan of that method too with my pneumatic-powered extractor (I do all my other transmissions that way for family vehicles i maintain). I was looking at case design, and I didn't see any way on the TF-80SC to get an extractor into the sump. I've had the cooler clips and the drain going into the trans off a few times with no leaks. The o-rings seem cheap, so maybe it's worth having one in case it tears (I keep 4 clips and 6 o-rings spare). The trans return is held on by a 8mm bolt and sealed with an o-ring. Even with lubrication it was hard to insert, but it did seal properly and after the quick spray of cleaner it hasn't seeped since! I too thought it would be a pain using the cooler method, but actually it wasn't messy and I felt good by the end the fluid was "completely" replaced with no old fluid remaining.

I've just done this on my wife's Freelander2 with the same box. Really easy. I found that around 2 litres came out each time. I topped a fresh 2 litres back in and ran the engine for 3-4 minutes to mix the fresh fluid in and ran the selector back and forth through each gear position a couple of times before switching off and repeating a few times till the fluid draining out was nice and cherry red!
For final level check, I used my multimeter to measure the gearbox end casing temp to be 45-50C. I was happy enough that the fluid temp would be near enough 60C. |
