Q3 At an independent (not a volvo specialist) I paid £191 +vat for the replacement altenator and £43 + vat for the altenator belt. Looking under the bonnet the new one is made by Denso. The old one was also made by Denso. I have not checked on what amps the new one delivers.

Q4 the 'altenator belt' was recommended. Having had the car since new in 2004 i don't recall the altenator or this belt being replaced so I had it done while the car was inthe garage.

I take it that the power steering is electrically assisted, when the warning message came on the steering became heavier. Is this consistent with the altenator not charging the battery or some form of limp home capability.
Thanks for the reply.

I sent for a new alternator and it arrived about 10:45 this morning, the cost was £103:55p including next day delivery and VAT etc., the make is RTX and it's a new build and has a non return note on the box.

When this all happened, I simply turned off and re-started the car and the warning message had gone, so I carried on driving, but after awhile we started smelling a burning smell so I pulled in and turned off to investigate, opened the bonnet and wisps of smoke were coming from the alternator.
Got back in the car and I had lost all power, after awhile power returned and I could lock and unlock the doors. I opened the boot to see if I had a spanner to disconnect the battery but I didn't have one.
I guess the alternator was burning out and drawing all power from the battery hense no power, after awhile I would think that the alternator had fully burnt out and power returned, this made me think that the internal wiring had burnt through completely.

I think I'll send for a new belt and have that replaced at the same time as you had done.

Thanks again.

Right, just to bring this thread up to date and help others.

1 x New RTX Alternator £103:55p all in with next day delivery from CarParts4Less.co.uk
1 x New ContiTech belt £13:19p all in with next day delivery from CarPart4Less.co.uk (This was done on seperate delivery otherwise it would have been £9:24p)
3 x Castrol Magnatec 5W/30 A1 Fully Synthetic oil Tesco Extra (a while ago as I knew that I would need it) £16 per 4 Ltrs
1 x New Oil Filter (Forget make but begins with M I think, something like Meher) £4:79p

Job done today at local garage.
Replace Alternator and belt
Change oil and filter
Slacken off wheel nuts and re torque them all up
Check codes with their reader
£50 all in for labour

Jobs a job, everything fine now.
Thanks for all the help.

Hi,
got a 2006 S40 1.8 petrol. Faulty alternator, all changed fine. Within a day got the error 'Power System Service Urgent'
A Volvo garage I know suggested the new alternator was not compatible (Lucas), should only use Volvo one as it contains a module that 'talks' to the car.
Car will drive for a while then get the Power System error and shortly after the car stops.
Is it correct about the alternator, if so which on to get and where from?
Thanks!

Volvo had few alternators, some models have LIN connected, is controlling the load with CEM. Original is Denso and is used across volvo/ford/mazda models. Just ring dealer to find the part # and cross reference. I have used one from kuga and its fine.
