Default Rattle - MY19 XC60

2 weeks ago (and 3 weeks after I got my car) whilst I was doing a motorway journey all of a sudden I started hearing rattle, which I never heard up until that point. I was in the driver’s seat and my wife in the passenger’s. I could hear the rattle more clearly in my left ear coming some where from the rear top of the car and my wife could hear in her right ear again she felt it was somewhere from the roof. The rattle is more pronounced and constant when the road is rough and there is constant vibration due to rough road surface. On the smooth surface we both didn’t hear any rattle. When driving over pot holes we could hear it but it is not a constant rattle. The sound felt more like metal v. plastic. Leaving the sun blind open or closed didn’t make any difference.

Mentioned it to the dealer last week when my car was with them for Polestar upgrade. They booked it in for yesterday. Took the car to them yesterday; it is a 15-mile journey from my place to the dealers and the rattle was still there. The lead technician drove the car himself with me in the passenger seat for about a mile. We both could hear the rattle. I was asked to leave the car for whole day and was given a courtesy car. Received call from the lead technician 2-3 hours after I handed over the car and he said that he test drove the car for 30 miles and couldn’t replicate the rattle. He said that he doesn’t want to spend 2-3 hours taking the roof lining apart when he is not sure where the rattle is coming from. But were they not supposed to investigate it for me or is it not their job to do that? Was asked to come and collect the car. He said that I should ‘persevere’ until it gets worse and then bring it to them for further investigation. I asked him what might have made the rattle go away to which he said may be because of hot weather. However, on my way back to home I was easily able to replicate the rattle more so on a rough surface or bumpy roads. The car is hardly a month old.

Have any one else driving MY19 XC60 has experienced the rattle described above? Any suggestions/advice on how I should follow this up with the dealer? What would have been your expectations from the dealer had you experienced similar issue. Thanks in advance for your time.

I have this rattle well might be the same, it is the central plastic housing at top of the screen for me, I bash it it stops rattling, only started happening a week or go or so, once bashed, it stops for quite a while. I am having the screen replaced in a few days time, so when they are doing it, I will look in there, see if I can see what is loose, though I suspect it is the housing itself, quite flimsy.

Thanks for your response. Yes, it might be the same rattle that I am experiencing. When you said ‘screen’ did you mean the sun blind. Looks like your dealer/technician figured out what is causing the rattle and hence the replacement of the screen.

I mean the whole windscreen, it has a huge crack in it. I have not been to my dealer yet, I found the rattle myself, just not solved it yet, if I cant I will take it on the 3 month check up and hopefully also polestar

I didn't have a rattle before I took out my car to the dealership who replaced my windscreen due to a crack, but now I do, since for some strange reason it seems that on the Intellisafe plastic housing just above the rear view mirror, they have broken the clips of a plastic which now moves and rattles.

To their credit they told me that they have ordered a new mechanism for the shade of the sunroof which was making a weird noise and they will also replace a plastic cover on the roof, (not telling me which one, but I assume most probably the one that broke).

I have a minor rattle related to the sunscreen. When opening the screen (from completely closed) it's fine for the first 20cm, but then comes ~10cm where the screen rattles when passing that area, and then its gone. No rattling during driving though, hence for now I have chosen to accept until first service.

I do have few other things as well though, including a front seat that slightly squeaks at times and a steering wheel that sometimes does the same.

I often get a faint but annoying rattle that seems to eminate from the dash or centre consul somewhere. One day i realised it was coming from the plastic water bottle in the passenger door pocket and whenever there’s a bottle in any door of either my Volvo or Honda, there’s this hard to pinpoint rattle. Now that the source is known, it is not so much a problem. It happens even when the thin water bottle is a tight fit in the pocket.

When there is a louder knock from the back, it is usually due to the deatbelt being twisted and not sitting as it should with the buckle and little loop at an angle.

I have a very similar rattle. Now I am thinking it started after I fixed the Dashcam, maybe the housing behind the rear view mirror is loose. I need to check when I get home.

The rattle that hear is not faint and very annoying one. I made sure there is nothing in the door holders or even in the glove box. Removed all the stuff like pens, trolley coins etc from the centre tunnel storage; the rattle still remained. The rattle in my car sounds nothing like a knock and there isn’t any heavy objects in the cargo area apart from the tempa wheel to cause that; even the tempa wheel is in the styrofoam mould and I don’t think that would make any noise though upon rubbing with the wheel. Scissor jack and other metal parts snuggly fit in the moulded shapes in the styrofoam and there is scope for them to move or vibrate.

I tried to diagnose the problem as much as I can but couldn’t find anything. Having said that, I am do not have specialist knowledge of expertise in that area. However, I was expecting my dealer to fully investigate the issue, which I feel never happened.

Do you mean there are two sources of rattle; one caused by the borken clips in the intellisafe housing and the other caused by sun shade mechanism. Btw what is the ‘plastic cover on the roof’ that you were referring to?
