Toyota Tundra pick-up perhaps? You know the ones, about the same size as a Kenworth tractor unit!

I'm glad you got all the insurance sorted, is there any sort of legal problem driving it on a Salvage Title until you get it repaired and inspected? I know here in the UK, some cars are written off because the damage would cost too much to fix but are still repairable, once they've been written off they can't go on the road until they've been inspected and declared safe. Sometimes the damage could just be paintwork and/or minor panel damage so those tend to be back on the road pretty quick, sometimes with no repairs at all, just scruffy paint!

Ha! I forgot Toyota makes things other than small-mid sized cars. I think it was a Corolla.

Considering I barely felt the impact, and that the damage ended up so severe, the idea that my car had been wrecked before on that spot seems very plausible. But I don't know. I've had a couple people mention that this car shouldn't have given in that spot.

Salvage title, I think, usually is meant to alert the next purchaser if I decide to revive the car and resell it at some point. It's more about lowering the resell value of the car. If it's true that my car had been in serious wreck previously, it probably should have been a salvage title when I bought it. But then, there were many dubious thing about this car when I bought it. It served me well regardless.

A Corolla?

That makes me think you're right, it did have a shunt in that area before. Maybe "Boris" did a cut'n'shut following an accident that was never reported to insurance/DMV officials so it was never recorded.

Like someone else said, the car has served you well, protected you in this accident, keep it on a salvage title and use if for spares for your next 940 then run it down to the scrapyard when you've got your moneys worth in spares.

Yes there could have been a previous impact. And bear in mind that the Volvo is designed to controlled deform at least in some respects. To save the occupants lives. Cushti !!!!

Many years ago I saw and had the chance to have a good look at a 745 at a Main Dealers that had precisely the same back end 'droop' damage as your 945. The back end had been 'open up' by Volvo themselves, and the amount of individual inner panel crumple damage (major and very minor) on all the internals across the back end was 'amazing' .... why ... because that's the way they were designed to 'fold' in a medium to heavy rear end shunt and still protect anyone in the back, especially the rear facing 'child' seats. Bob.

I worked with petroleum for many years and it's the fumes which catch fire, they are actually more combustible than the liquid and fumes combined with a hot exhaust will be a lethal combination. You say you can't see the fumes but they will spray out in an invisible fine mist or vapour from a fine crack you probably can't even see and they are not just a fire hazard, they are also very damaging for your brain and health. I don't think your plan to look for fumes with the engine running is a very safe one for you, you will be taking a big risk. We love our Volvos but in the words of the song 'Too much love will kill you''. Stay safe

I agree with classic.
I sometimes drive short distances with the tailgate open a crack, for quick loading/unloading, I have a small wedge to prop it open at the bottom catch.
Sometimes, especially starting from cold, I smell fuel fumes.
With the tailgate completely closed : no fumes at all.
I presume it is to do with the air flow while moving washing exhaust gases against the bottom lip of the tailgate.
Try shining a torch from outside/inside at night with someone watching for the light along the bottom of your now-buckled rear end.

Exhaust fumes are lethal. Petrol vapour is potentially lethal.

Both advices that have been given are utterly serious.
