thermostat help
I need a new thermostat for my 06 185 d5, just been to the dealers and they quoted £98 ! they only sell the complete housing, went to my local motor factor and they quoted £ 140, but looking at their line drawing the housing seems to contain a standard stat. has anyone changed the element by itself ?

There are 3 types. The cheapest is the T6 at £14. Don't think there is an alternative.

If you change the thermostat, that might be a good time to drain and replace the coolant. The anticorrosive additives in the coolant are rated to last 150,000 miles or 5 years, whichever comes first. The anticorrosive action may last 6 years, but you are taking a risk to go beyond that. You risk perforating the radiator, the heater matrix, the ATF cooler (if equipped with an autobox), the engine oil cooler, etc.
You don't need to exhaustively flush. Just drain and rinse by pouring in a couple of 4-L bottles of distilled or deionized water and allowing this to drain. Then close the radiator drain valve or reattach the lower radiator hose. Now add the right amount of neat antifreeze (Volvo antifreeze has the right chemicals that Volvo has decided upon), fill up with distilled or deionized water.
