regarding the noisy tappets i think you can buy new ones with larger holes for the oil ways. there around 9 quid each. dont know if they work. i sometimes search for parts using the carisma's engine code its something
4G93 but dont quote me on that

I believe that your wife's drive (even f sedate) would be ok due to the distance. They seem to have been built as a "petrol diesel" for long journeys but not always at high speeds.

The damage is done by the short journey when the engine doesn't get hot enough to burn off the crap - hence the recomendation for the "Italian tune up" once a week, blowing the cobwebs out
Very interesting, that contradicts what Volvo and the independent specialist have said to me. I thought that heat would play a part in the carbon build up but they both said it doesn’t. Very interesting.

I feel volvo should have come up with a way to controll the carbon build up and injector faults a long time ago.

They told me to get the revs up above 3-3.5k for 10-20 mins each week so I drive between Reading and Bracknell on the A329M in third.

Pretty much goes to show that nobody's really sure of the cure!

They had the nerve to tell me that it wasn't Volvo's fault as it wasn't their engine. Well, - they put the chuffing thing in the car!!

I agree that a long motorway journey is good for these cars. Think they were designed to be fleet cars for reps to give good economy under motorway conditions.

Kinda makes sense as in 5th doing 70 on the motorway the engine is at about 3000 rpm. Not exactly a thrashing but better than 1500 rpm (and less) around town.

Also, volvo told me that the problem they get with the injectors is that the engine is mitsubishi but the injectors are volvo and they don't quite match up correctly - so them saying it's not their fault is not strictly true (although looks like everyone is told the first thing that springs into the customer services guys mind).

That is the first cure i've heard for the tappets but think i will investigate.
