I've used coke cans and aluminium tape. Aluminium tape worked well for the hole in the back box, it was splitting along the seam and when I used just the gunk it shot out when I started the car. Re-stuffed the hole and wrapped the entire thing with aluminium tape and it's solid.

It passed MOT with only one advisory for an exhaust leak, although the guys at the garage made me promise to get it fixed ASAP...

Yep. I had to do that as a temporary fix on the rear silencer on the wentworth. It was booked in for MOT but the exhaust hadn't arrived so I used a Heinz soup tin, as evidenced forever in this advisory notice.

Has anyone checked the crank sensor ? It's bolted onto the top of the gearbox bellhousing, and it's also directly under the non return valve for the bonnet mounted screenwash jets. When they fail, they can leak onto the wiring connector and the sensor itself. I had this happen on an R reg 2.3 lpt and it made the engine stall, and put the lambda light on. Car started again straight afterwards, but light stayed on until I reset it by disconnecting the battery.

It's usually Jags that eat crank sensors, but maybe worth checking. When the car's idling, why not connect up a strobe timing light and see whether the ignition timing is stable ?

Many and many a time. Always comes up with incorrect air/fuel mixture - no ignition problems. Clear it, comes back. Repeat for the last 6 months.

If my idea is right about the fuse and it's the one feeding the in-tank pump and the Lambda sensor that will give that fault code.
