Default Using oil and a few other issues

Ive recently got a 96 1.8le cvt auto I had a few rough running issues but Ive changed the plugs and air filter as well as replacing a couple of vacuum hoses. and this has made it better but not perfect,it idles at just over 1000rpm.

I have checked the fault codes and it is clear. It is also using oil but not leaking oil and when I put my foot down I do get a little puff of smoke from the exhaust, although the tail pipe is reasonably clean.

The oil needs changing but I am loathed to put something half decent in if it is just going to get burnt. Over 500ish miles the level goes from the top mark on the dipstick to the bottom.

If anyone has any suggestions they would be gratefully recieved.

Sounds to me like the engine is low on compression, so the ecu is upping the revs to stop it cutting out. do a compression test and follow the instructions provided with the tester and you will soon know if it's blow by from the piston rings or top end wear (duff valve guides ect)

but either way it sounds as though the engine is tired and so i would say use cheap oil and try some STP stop smoke and see if that improves oil consumption
