Default Knocking noise from gearbox, M47

I just realised that the noise I thought coming from the engine is in fact coming from the gearbox. It is a rythmic noise but does not sound like metal on metal (although it could be if submerged in oil I guess). It dies away when you put the clutch in but is there in neutral, first, second and third but not I think in fourth. As it happens in neutral with the car stationary it is definitely input shaft related.
Is it time to order a new gearbox?

This is eaither the input shaft bearing or the layshaft thus it does it in neutral. This is a tough old gear box so you must have done a bucket load of miles or just unlucky. The input shaft bearing is pretty robust but the layshaft needle rollers may be the cause of the noise. Regards Peter

The car only has only done 167,000 so I guess I'm just a bit unlucky. What is the possibility of repair for an enthusiastic amateur with basic tools like me? Given that I will have to remove it from the car anyway is it going to be less trouble just to fit a replacement box or are the parts cheap and the r&r easy? I have never done anything other than change the oil on a gearbox so I don't know what's involved. I do have a three leg puller and know a man with a press.

Personally I would fit a good s/hy box a lot quicker an easier. Don't forget clutch and rear oil seal at the same time.
