That's done it now - and just when the radio's were so old they are of absolutely NO interest to anyone.........................................

I didn't imagine I'd get such a large response! I agree that tucking the new unit down below is better for security but the new unit I've bought is a face off. I am going to attempt to make a mount for the upper bin - progress will be posted!

Thanks for the advice chaps.

OK, fitted. It is so easy to get a CD in with the unit down there, that I'm going to leave it, plus the illumination is so bright I think it would be distracting mounted high up.
Now of course, the speakers in the doors (JVC 100mm) sound a bit pants and I need to get some fitted in the back......

There's what looks like one in this collection of bits:

I've gone and made a box to house two six inch drivers that can sit behind the folding rear seat to compliment the tiddly speakers in the front door panels. Pic to come. The head unit I fitted can power them OK without a seperate amp so although I won't have concert hall sized sound, it'll be better than nothing!

Default upper dash radio panel

I've at last got round to sorting out thye radio in my 245GLT. It had a Sony mounted at the bottomwhich I found a problem as I couldn't see the controls very easily. It also had the original Volvo radio at the top. I removed this and utilised the surround from it to house the new radio. It was just a case of carefully cutting out to take the new radio and fitting it.

No. There is a 'pocket' that fits in the upper dash position and the surround from the vents below the upper dash position but nothing to help you mount a radio.

Yes I found the illumination very distracting when I had a stereo mounted in the upper position. It was a big relief when I moved it down to the bottom. Now I can't read the markings on the buttons so I just had to learn which button did what.

As promised, here's a picture of the MDF speaker box to sit in the load area.

It's 24 inches wide with a dividing baffle giving each 6 inch speaker roughly 1 cubic foot of air. I need to pop the end plates on with the plastic ports inserted then plug it in!
