Default Engine System/Oil Level Service Reqd -just bought the car :(

Bought a used XC60 2.4 D5 Drive (98,000 miles) on Saturday, drove the 120 miles home and by Sunday I had the dreaded "Engine System Service Required" message. Looking through these forums I managed to figure out it is related to the well-documented oil level issue. It is showing over maximum and says "Oil Level Service Required" (once I figured out how to find the menu). I've read every forum message on the issue but can't seem to establish what the problem/solution is as people in the forum don't seme to post resolutions that often - some people said it was sensor related, the others the DPF, others just overfull with oil and issue goes away? Any ideas?

The car supermarket have asked me to take it into Halfords tomorrow as they dont have an account with Volvo, god help me!!

Hi
I had this a few weeks ago and posted on here. Can't remember if I posted the solution or not. They said that on this car you should only fill it to 80% because the dpf will eventually cause the oil levels to rise.. When I took mine back to the garage, they just emptied some oil out. It still reads full though, not 80% so I'm expecting the same issue again sometime. Will be monitoring it.

Have a look at my post called "Oil over maximum - anyone else had this ?" From a few weeks ago as a lot of people had ideas to help me. Also, from a post I made (same wording) on another board before I realised I'd got the wrong one, here are some additional comments:

1 You had a service in December , perhaps it was overfilled or filled to max instead of 70% up the dipstick , it should only have 5.5 litres added at service , any more can cause your problems , just drain out a litre and it should reset itself .

2 Before worrying unduly, check the oil on the dipstick and around the filler for any sign of creamy, thin mayonnaise type emulsion....this would be bad news.

3 Vehicles stood for a long time sometimes get condensation in the oil but it usually burn off leaving little or no residue.

Thanks for all the replies, I will report back here for people's future reference.

Incidentally, Halfords seem to have come to the conclusion to simply drain and replace the oil to the 5.7 litres reccomended (I think), and also cleaning out the DFP (they havent reported any milky/creamy substance on the cap or dipstick). It may make sense - the car had a 114 point check (apparantly) by the car supermarket before being bought so they may have overfilled the oil by mistake - but I cant help thinking that if this was the case then it would have shown up on the two test drives since it was serviced about 4 weeks ago. Let's see.....

Only been two days but all seems well *touch one hell of a lot of wood*. So maybe it was a simple over-filling issue.....
