Default Whining noise

Hi, I have recently bought a 2005 Volvo S40. I noticed a low whining noise which becomes much louder when turning the wheel. Its quite annoying. Does anyone know what it could be and what I can do to fix it? Thanks a mil!

Sounds like it might be the power steering pump, especially as it becomes louder when you turn the wheel (this is when it has to work instead just idling).

Most likely a front wheel bearing , the electric powersteering pump makes very little noise ...

...unless it's shagged. He wouldn't hear the bearing while stationary. He needs to tell us wheather the noise happens while driving or stationary.

Doesn't it depend on the engine? I mean, some have an electrical steering pump (i.e. 2.0/1.8l) and others a mechanical (1.6,...) one.

Maybe it would help to know which engine we are talking about!?

As soon as you turn on the engine you hear the noise, then it gets louder as you turn the wheel. Its a 1.8 petrol with 55km. How much is a new power steering pump? I only just bought the car!!! Thanks for the replies!

steering can whine... mine does from time to time not necessarily a big deal AFAIK.

Step 1 - check your PAS fluid level and top up if needed!

Oh really? Cool, well it was low enough for the first few days but its getting louder. It just went thought the NCT so I thought if it was the fuel pump it would have been picked up. I'll check the fluid tomorrow. Cheers! Hopefully thats all it is!

Ha ha yee love the oul wife jokes! Well I am a wife and I certainly dont whine at myself in the car so it must be either the pump or the steering! I'll get it checked out!
