Does this turbo need a rebuild?
Ok, so as most know my turbo died a miserable death and I just received a replacement. The turbine housing is cracked, no surprises there.
The guy said shaft had zero play. It does have zero horizontal play, but it does have a bit of side to side play. I know a bit of side-to-side is normal, but the movement is accompained by a squooshy sound of oil. Maybe it's just because it's not under oil pressure, or is it a sign of the seals giving up!? The guy said th chra is about 10k old. It seems faily alright. I'm just wondering if it warrants disassembly and maintenance. btw, the turbine housing has lots of soot, so I wonder if the engine was just runing rich or if I can be related to a turbo internal oil leak. No one has any opinion regarding this?
I might just assemble the part and check the compressor side for oil leaks a weak later or so. In case it's leaking bad I can take it off again and deal with it. Meanwhile I'll have the old one disassembled and probably will have a clearer picture of how to rebuild one of these, in case I need to.

If it was me and I was planning on keeping the turbo original and going for a long time then yes I'd get it rebuilt, you could get a nice billet compressor wheel too, Tom on here has for his hearse.

btw this was supposed to have the 0.65 bar wastegate. Aren't the WGs bigger than the lpt one supposed to have extendable arm? This one is fixed arm length.

If it is going to be replaced at some point then it's probably worth just fitting it.
The wastegate looks the same as the LPT one but has a stiffer spring inside so pulling back the wastegate actuator arm should be a lot harder to do than on the LPT one. |

Obviously only you can judge the amount of play in the shaft, however a small amount of lateral movement is expected. I can't see any damage to the blades, and they don't seem to be contacting the surface - and as you're going to replace it anyway I'd say stick it on and see. Its certainly better than the one you took off

"GOGOGO" it's gonna be me when I finally feel the boosty powaa! Probably going from virtually zero boost to (if nothing else pops up) probably 0.65 bar. Quote:
