Question fitting Strut Braces

Hi all,

I'am about to fit a set of strut-braces to my 245 and I'am looking for some advice. The strut connects between the firewall and the top of the front suspension assy by using the nut at the rear of the assembly.

Before undoing the nut on the strut mount ( the nut at the rear ) do I need to support the suspension in any way or is it safe enough to undo the nut fit the brace and then but the nut back on?.

thanks in advance

brendan

Hi Brendan.
The strut brace you are refering to would normally fit to the rear of the tree studs on the strut. The safe way to guarantee trouble free installation is to keep the car on the ground so full weight is on the strut.
Undo and remove nut, fit strut brace replacing nut. Repeat for other side - job safely done.

A brace that only attaches to one one point on the strut is not going to do much. What do you think a strut brace will do for a 240 ?? Regards Peter

The strut to bulkhead was standard I believe on the 242GT and the high spec turbos providing some increased rigidity. Full front brace was one between the struts and also a lower one as well was fitted to competition vehicles.

Brendan;
I have never tried these braces myself, but I hear they do make a difference. Over here they are known as "ambulance braces", which should indicate they are well worth the effort. Just one thing: I believe they originally came with bolts (aluminium?) that will shear in a crash so the braces won't go through the firewall and into the passenger compartment. It might be wise to refrain from using ordinary steel bolts.

I have two sets of these braces one in the 242 and one in my 245, i drive the 245 regularly and it does indeed make a difference, along with a lowered and hardened suspension it gives a tighter feel.

Both of the sets i got imported from australia where i believe they were fitted to 242GT's.
