Default Thinking of buying an 05 XC90 2.9 petrol

Hi guys,

As title describes I’ve seen one of these with low miles, 63k!

I have no experience at all of these...Anybody Know anything about the year/type I describe?

Thanks in advance.

If it's a 2.9 petrol it's a T6 and the gearbox on these is made of chocolate.

Only XC90 in the range with a GM gearbox and it's simply not up to the job.

Personally I wouldn't touch one no matter how nice the car is.

If you do intend going ahead make sure that you have a long test drive and get the gearbox thoroughly warmed through as it will then show any issues.

Do a search on XC90 T6 do get a better overview.

The 2.5 and 3.2 petrol are not fitted with this gearbox and are a much safer bet as are all of the diesels.👍

^^^^ what he said.

In all probability you would be better looking at any other model with twice the mileage on.

Oh dear - I didn’t check in with the forum and went full steam ahead and bought it!!!

If the worst happens and the auto box goes, what is the kind of figure for a replacement? Are these known for any other issues? I’m already contemplating reselling!

Looks like it would be worth finding a good warranty for it if you are going to keep it.

Inconveniently, most (all?) warranties have a 15 year vehicle age cut-off.

I bought this from a client who had bought a new car.... thing is, they are loaded (multi millionaires), so I’m very doubtful if they are even aware an issue exists...

Like I say, I can only hope I’m one of the lucky ones.... but if not, what kind of price would an independent charge for a replacement?

Probably around £3k from prices I have seen quoted by others previously.

If you have bought it cheap and it's fault free you may be lucky because some have been.

That said, the general consensus with that GM box is not if it will fail but rather when.

The T6 engine is nice though. 👍

I think the old adage of, 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' can come to mind here.

Just enjoy the thing until or if it fails - you must have liked the car to buy it in the first place! If we made every decision based on the bad things that COULD (a very overused word in the press these days which effectively has no meaning other than raising a discussion over probability) happen we would never get out of bed in the morning.

The XC90 is a brilliant car and the best all-round package I have owned. You made a good decision and the gearbox could fail just like every other component the car is made of.

Best of luck with it - enjoy!
