Just a quick post to highlight to anyone reading this thread that you should please ignore the 4 year old price shown in my post on page 1.
As with all posts I make here prices can and will change over time, but we continually get quoted out of date prices by people who have not noticed how old my post was! I understand that when someone posts in a thread it brings it back up to the top and can make an old post appear like it is much newer. This VVT pulley is one of the prices I should mention as this is the one that seems to be misquoted to us more than anything else, and now I have finally had chance to find it. I'm afraid that Volvo do up their prices from time to time, for example the retail price of the VVT pulley is today currently £165.60 while we supply them at £140.76 including VAT, plus delivery. (The solenoid has only gone up by about £10 but those are now exchange items.) We still offer the same discount as we always have done, 15% off the retail price. Many thanks, Simon

I wish i had found this forum 4 years ago when i bought my v40, i paid about £136 for the vvt pulley & cam blanking cap from harratts of sheffield in 2009. Dread to think what they would charge me now ! But at least they gave me the radio code for free !

Hi guys
I have a Volvo s40 sport 1.8 52 reg, I got the vvt pulley done by my local Honda specialist. Sometime I am having very sluggish start up I have got the timing and ignition timing checked all seems fine. Can someone tell me can the vvt pulley can cause sluggish start up at random times? Thanks Basi |

i wondered if it might get better, once the new timing belt (replaced at the same time as the VVT pulley) had worn in? |

There is a specific sequence when replacing the VVT, hence if the mechanic doesn`t know how to then have it done at Volvo.
Even if half a tooth out it will effect the performance, it does sound as though your valve timing is retarded. |

After a long time with whirring and clicking - diagnosed last November by my local Volvo indie as the VVT pulley when I took the car in for something else - finally got around to having it replaced, along with the cam belt (which hadn't long been done anyway) and a new set of plugs (Volvo ones)....
Collected Sat morning, and just drove it briefly around town (30mph limits) immediately afterwards, and only noticed it was back to running almost silent, exactly like when I first got it. On going to/coming home from work last night however: I have a gravel drive, and am careful pulling off it to avoid spitting stones everywhere - last night applying the 'usual' amount of power meant I didn't move. Had to use more to start moving.... Struggled to accelerate up the short hill outside work when leaving, and then on the short stretch of dual carriageway at the top, putting my foot down only resulted in seeing the guys I usually breeze past pulling away from me - down at least 10mph at the various points where I would normally be doing certain speeds (eg., not even at 50 where should have been doing 60).... Something's apparently wrong following the work - the question is, what? Timing out, as above, perhaps?

Had mine done by an independent specialist about a week ago - its transformed the car
No more horrible rattling noise Starts quicker Engine smoother More power Better economy. Cost just over £500 using genuine parts - not cheap but worth doing if you intend to keep the car - which I do. |
