Temp gauge up to max and excess water and steam out of the radiator overflow then a lot of water back in after it has cooled down. There is no expansion tank. I am pretty sure there is air trapped in the heater control valve and/or the heater radiator and on the advice of Ron will be "burping" it this morning to see if I can get rid of the air.

OK burping carried out as suggested by Ron and I now have a warm heater. Left it running with radiator cap off and as the thermostat opened I got a big overflow (presumably the burp) from the radiator. Left it a bit longer and then let it cool down. Filled up the radiator when cooled and squeezed the various heater hoses. Let it run again without cap and it didn't overflow this time so left it running and the heater was warm.
Let it cool again before refitting radiator cap and went for a run of about 20 miles, all appears well so far (fingers crossed till they hurt). Will run it when its not piddling down and see how it goes. Thanks for all the advice. The bowden cable was fine as was the Heater Control Valve. Flushing the heater radiator produced nothing of note so it would seem to be trapped air, hopefully. |

Great news well done.
Sometimes air can be difficult to get out..a case in point as R53 Mini Coopers which can be destroyed if all the air is not purged. This is not unusual with todays plastic pigs without temperature gauges and relying on some sensor which by the time the warning light comes on the damage is done. Thankfully our cars are robust, dont contain alloy heads or blocks but damage will certainly be there if our are driven any distance with the car simulating a steam train. Before I retired I invested in a tool similar to this one and I have retained the bit of kit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwUHkee-ovw It hooks up to your compressor and everything then is good to go. It will purge the old coolant and refil. And a regular cheap air compressor will work. The kit I have will work with expension and non expansion bottled cars. I cannot remember the precise cost of mine, and it is fair to say mine has more doo dads than the one in the You Tube , but i can remember it cost me about £30- £50 I know its a bit bolting the stable door after the horsehas buggered off but it may help you in the future and hopefully others..
