Default What is the timing belt change interval for 940 2.4 diesel

I want to know the recommended time and/or distance between timing belt changes for the 940 2.4 diesel (intercooler).

A search has not turned up this information - I'd be grateful to be pointed to where I can find it.

Thanks,
Martin

Default d24Tic belt

You won't go wrong with 5yr / 50k miles. If you cannot get a Volvo belt Gates is recommended, as your car is post 93 it will be 5398XS, 120x 1" (pre 93 is 119, you will sometimes see these belts advertized for post 93 cars!!).

Many thanks. It's 5 years and 60,000 miles so time to get it done.

Is it known what Volvo specify? Ideally with a reference to where it is stated.

Martin,
I imagine Volvo specify a Volvo belt..... but I've never checked to see whether they still carry them, you would certainly be fortunate to find tensioner and water pump, should you be tempted.
Likewise I cannot specifically recall where I first saw the Gates recommendation, it may have been in this forum or failing that on the US d24 forum (d24 list at tufts.edu, resident guru Tom Bryant {thosbryant.wordpress.com}).
Something like this seems reasonable; item 372837571393 belt and water pump, some of them will have belt and pulley, I've never seen an ad for all 3.

There are three different recommendations here :

https://www.volvoclub.org.uk/faq/Eng...tml#TimingBelt

The lowest is 50k miles, then 60k and finally 80k - if it was me i'd do it every 48k or 4 years to be on the safe side.

Gates belts were OE suppliers to Volvo, not sure who supplied VAG originally but you won't go far wrong with a Gates or Dayco belt. Not sure what the tensioner arrangement is on the D24TIC but worth checking on whether it needs renewal either on inspection during the change or at a specified time. If nothing is stated, renew it with the belt - likewise the water pump if that is driven from the timing belt.

Given the IP is driven off the timing belt as well, i'd be inclined to sliec the belt in half length-ways and slip the front half off to keep all the pulleys in the same place in relation to each other, slacken the tensioner and then fit the new belt halfway onto the pulleys. Then cut the remains of the old belt off and using a flat piece of wood, tap the new belt fully home going round the various pulleys in turn to ease it on gradually.

Then reset the tension/renew the tensioner and follow any other instructions in the link above.

Good luck with it!

Link to the one Jor found ^^^^^ includes tensioner and water pump as well as belt, for cars up to 1994.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Genui...y/202910636188

SKF timing belt kit inc water pump, slightly cheaper.

Can't find one for a post 94/95 car though.........

My thanks to all for the comprehensive information.

The key thing from the information kindly provided by commenters here is that now is the time, both from elapsed time and miles clocked up, to get the complete timing system replaced.

No shortage of scary comments on the Volvoclub web pages:
Quote:
If you've never dealt with timing belts before, the D24 is not for the weak-hearted. Timing one of these things is not overly difficult, but it requires having the proper tools, an above- average level of mechanical skill, and following directions exactly in the factory green manual. Anytime that you fool with the timing belt on a diesel, count on retiming the whole engine (special tools required ) You might get lucky and have the new pump be the exact dimensions as the last one and have the timing belt under tension wind up in the same place...but I wouldn't count on it. Often mechanics will try to swap water pumps on these engines and they won't start after completion.
Five years ago, Monsieur Dalert, the enthusiastic and helpful proprietor of the local garage, changed the timing belt on this car. I believe he was formerly a Volvo maintenance area manager and he certainly knows rear wheel drive Volvos inside out. I am fully occupied with other projects at present so I think I'll ask him to do it again. DL Autos Aubigny
