2005 Volvo V50 strange electrical problem.
Hi all
I have a 2005 Volvo v50 2.0d se last week when i locked the car on remote i noticed the passenger foot well light stayed on and the offside rear passenger door lock would not open or lock unless done manually. I removed the bulb from passenger footwell to save battery draining, however this has now developed into a stranger problem, when i turn the key to II nothing happens on the instrument panel its completely dead no lights or info panel, however when i start the engine the instrument panel springs into life and all works normal including when driving etc, but if i now open any of the doors while the engine is running the instrument panel turns off again completely dead until i close the the door when it flickers back on. however this does not happen with the offside rear passenger door which has the locking problem. any ideas much appreciated, thanks. guessing its all related to the faulty door? |

I would first of all check your CEM (behind glove box in passenger footwell) connections they are notorious for causing random electrical issues in these cars. It usually happens after the cabin filter has been replaced due to the CEM having to be removed to change the filter.

Strange electrical problem on a V50
Thanks for the tip. I'll have a look.
My windscreen wipers turn themselves on, and stay on. The indicators won't work and there's a message say "anti-skid device required" or similar. |

V50 strange electrical problems
Hi all,
I got "SRS Urgent Service" message a couple weeks ago when the morning temperature was -6c. The issue cleared when the day warmed up a little and didn't return for a few days when the temp was -3c. Mechanic cleared a long list of fault codes pertaining to the SRS system and told me to come back when the warning came up again. Day before yesterday, it was -4c. I started the car to warm up whilst i scraped the ice off the windows and all was fine. Got back into car to change the heater to warm up the cabin ready for my son and wife and noticed the DIM and dials were dead. I power cycled the ignition with no change. Waterfall controls all fine, just the DIM was dead. Again, issue disappeared when the day warmed up. Yesterday morning, same issue - dead DIM. Disappeared once warmed up. Last night, nothing worked properly: Remote Central locking - Dead Windows - Dead DIM - Dead Radio - Lit up but dead Blower, Waterfall controls, Indicators, Wipers, headlight controls, headlights - All dead! Cycled ignition and got Red triangle and flashing yellow warning on DIM. No click from starter. Headlight control panel lights flickering and randomly flashing. Removed keys from ignition and radio infopanel stayed on, no central locking, etc. 10 minutes later, car had 'reset' itself and all was working except dead DIM. Today had battery and alternator tested. Unfortunately, neither of them are at fault. Its been suggested the 'Body Control Module' is at fault which could be £100-150 for a software re-program or £800+ for a new BCM. All i can find is that the BCM is the white plastic tray for the connectors, fuses, etc. under the glove box and can find plenty of these on EBay for around £30 so i assume it's not that. Can anyone advise whether or not it's safe for me to unplug the various items and check the connections and so forth before paying out to a specialist or Volvo? Also, can anyone shed some light on what i might expect so i'm not going in blind? Thanks in advance. |

Cam is the white plastic tray below the glovebox. Disconnect battery, drop the tray down then push home all fuses, undo all the connectors one by one treat with electrical contact cleaner then refit, finally reconnect battery.
