Default Low beam too low - range adjuster not wokring

Hello all,

2004 D5 XC90. My headlights are very low and the dial you use to adjust the height on the dashboard is not working. Any idea if there is a fuse I should be checking linked to headlight motor? I've had a look at the diagrams but cant see anything. Thx.

and the answer is......... the motors were not seated correctly into the back of the headlights. A while ago I removed the headlights to clean them up and when I fitted the motors back in they were not engaging with the white plastic control arm in the headlight.

At least I saved myself the embarrassment of solving it before I went to a dealer. Definitely a forehead slapping moment!

Thats good

Your problem can also be caused by the failure of the alignment / angle sensor found on the rear axle.... this can sometimes be fixed by a re-calibration with VIDA (SUM-CALIBRATION).

Might be useful for anyone reading this in the future.

That's only for xenon lights which don't have the adjuster on the dash as this replaces it. You can also read live data from the sensor with vida which is usful in identifiying a faulty sensor.

As an add on to this, is there a way of setting the head lights to the correct height/angle of beam besides going to a garage.
When parked up pointing towards my garage they look ok and level but when out on a night one appears higher than the other and further off to one side.
It is a 2004 model so halogen lights only.

Thanks
Damian.

I have removed this sensor from the rear axle for inspection.
I have it on the work bench. It has a 3 wire connection. What tests can I do using a DVM ? How do I know if its working?

There's a small plastic hexagon on top of each light unit ( something like a 5 mm socket fits it) turn this anticlockwise to raise the lights
