This is pretty misleading and disgraceful behaviour from TomTom:
TomTom's website, however, claims that the term "lifetime" means "useful life" and not until it stops working. That's defined, by TomTom, as "the period of time TomTom supports your device with updates, services, content or accessories. A device will have reached the end of its life when none of these are available any more."

So basically lifetime updates means TomTom will update the maps and software for as long as it feels like. And once those updates stop coming, the satnavs themselves can end up out of date quite quickly
.
I note that Volvo claims the LED lamps fitted in our cars will last the lifetime of the car. Perhaps we'll also get a new definition of 'lifetime' from Volvo when the units fail outside of warranty.

TomTom (as well as others) use another ploy as well, the TomTom app I used on my laptop to update my One XL satnav (old but did everything I needed it for) invited you to update the app and after update it no longer supports the One XL, and the old version of the app was no longer available to download.
They then try and sell you a new satnav at prices way higher than other outlets, the old app version worked perfectly and updated maps with no problems, but once you updated it you are locked out. I still use my One XL in my Defender.

I read TomTom’s press release from Jun 2016 that said “From 2019, Volvo Cars’ customers across the globe*, across all carlines on the SPA and CMA platforms, will be able to enjoy an exceptional navigation experience powered by TomTom’s complete suit of components......”

Although they are referring to year 2019, I am wondering if MY19 cars produced in 2018 will be having SatNavs powered by TomTom!! I wish and hope they do
