Would be good to ask this owner which oil did he use

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZmPOlWJrz8

He actually sold the car with 710000km. The new owner reached 755000km recently.

Volvo xc90, 245k on the clock so far. When I bought it I took it to Volvo dealer for full service and they changed the oil for Castrol and after small few thousands it was below minimum. I did some research and since then I’ve been using Motul 5W-40 X-cess and Mann filters. I change it every 6-8k and if it’s around 8k the level of oil is at minimum meaning it’s much better for my engine. Different oils are good for different temperatures but there is no need to use 0w-30 if you don’t leave In Norway.

Does your D5 consume oil? When we bought ours it was arb 3/4 and 2k on it’s still at the same spot. Do they burn oil? Ours is at 166k

Some do! Plenty of reports (specifically of 2007 models) of very heavy oil consumption. Mine (with 160k) was using 2 litres every 400 miles. It was eventually diagnosed as worn piston rings, the thinking was this was caused by the excess diesel pumped into the cylinder during the DPF regeneration. If you have a search you will find a few threads with various people suffering the same fate.

Actually I’m not sure whether it consumes oil or it’s leaking somewhere. There are some very small leaks but I can’t estimate how much of the missing is leaking/burning. On the other hand I think it’s around 1litre for 6-8k miles so for a 250k miles engine it sounds good.

Based on some manufacturers my engine is better than most new ones .

Read something online the other day about using a low ash oil, it mentioned that you have to use correct grade "low ash" oil to stop your DPF filling up. Lots of problems with the DPF can be avoided if people use the correct oil, it went on to say more older cars that get serviced by owners suffer DPF clogging up due to the use of cheaper oils that are not low ash.

Just a quick question before I take 40ltr back to ecp.

I have triple qx 5w30 fully synthetic ACEA A5/B5

But that oil is not low ash.... would ACEA C5 be ok to use as I can’t find out that fits the same spec and low ash?

Thanks
