It's been a while, but the car was parked level for around 3 hours yesterday evening, so I made some oil level checks... e-dipstick showed 'max', however the Car Scanner app showed only 25.68mm. The engine was probably still quite warm as it had been driven at motorway speeds for around an hour before being parked.
According to VIDA 2014d data provided in post #16 of this thread by @piotrek (copied below) this level is below the quoted normal range of 27-49mm and almost down to the 25mm trigger point for the yellow warning 'add 0.5L' message. Can anyone please confirm whether the threshold values have been recently revised? _______________________ Engine oil level (mm) The value regards the current oil level. The signal comes from the directly connected engine oil level sensor which provides information about the oil level in the engine's oil pan. Measurement range: 0 – 65 mm. Normal value: 27 - 49 mm, which corresponds to a total oil volume of 4.4 - 5.2 litres (+ 0.4 litre in the filter). Note! The levels above apply if the oil temperature is approximately 20°C. At 50°C corresponding volumes are 4.3 – 5.1 litres. At 80°C corresponding volumes are 4.2 – 5.0 litres. After oil service/oil change the level must be 38 mm. After filling the engine must first be started, to fill the oil filter with oil, then the oil must be allowed to run back down into the oil pan. See specifications - Lubricant, engine for exact volumes for oil service. Note! The vehicle must be located on a level surface and with the engine off for a while so that the read out value is reliable. The time depends on the current oil temperature as hot oil runs down into the trough quicker than cold oil. The longer the engine is off, the more reliable the value from the sensor is. If the oil temperature is below 80°C read off after 5 minutes minimum. Hint: The oil level 25 mm (4.2 litres + 0.4 litres in the filter) corresponds to the limit for low oil (yellow information lamp) and 18 mm (3.9 litres + 0.4 litres in the filter) corresponds to the limit for critical low oil level (red information lamp). The oil level 51 mm (5.4 litres + 0.4 litres in the filter) corresponds to the limit for high oil level (red warning lamp). The limits apply at an oil temperature of 20°C. Note! The value from the sensor is updated with a new value every ten seconds. _______________________

My car, now with 135k on the clock, has creeped up to needing around 1L of oil added every 6k miles...

About 1k miles or so since my previous post... Parked up on level ground for a few hours today, when I returned I found the e-dipstick was still showing maximum but the car scanner app was reading only 19.33mm (that was before starting). Seems low.

Oil leak 2014 2.0 diesel D4
Hi everybody
This is my first post on this forum, so let me first thank all for your very informative contributions. We have a 64 plate V60 D4 with almost 130k on the clock of which 90% are motorway miles. Regularly changing oil + filters (every 10k), cam belt (water pump and tensioner @108k), breaks, tires etc. After the last oil + filter change we noticed an increased oil consumption. In just 3000 miles we had to top up a litre of oil. No leaks from the filter housing or around sump nut. Normally (from previous experience) 1l should have been enough for about 15k miles. We are using Comma Eco-V 0w20 (Volvo approved). The only thing I noticed was the car very gently jumped/jerked once or twice when cold. We took it to Volvo for a health check (and a software update) and they discovered oil leak at cam end cap (requires resealing) and (more worrying!) at valve rocker cover (according to Volvo the cover needs replacing). We are still waiting for the quote (and a heart attack ) . My questions: 1.) The cam end cap and seal is a relatively straight forward fix. Parts cost about £15, fiddly but doable. 2.) The valve rocker cover however; according to my understanding this is a black plastic cover with a gasket that covers the valves at the top of the engine. Here is my first question; a.) does it make sense to you, that such vital part needs replacing so soon? I would expect a new gasket should sort the problem? b.) I have read somewhere on this portal that when multiple gaskets blow, this usually indicates increased pressure in the engine, which usually means the PCV and/or breather pipe is/are blocked. Volvo never mentioned that. c.) Could "jumping" when cold be somehow connected to PCV rather then oil leak? I will appreciate any of your experiences or guidance how to resolve this. Regards |
