I encountered two cases of the camshaft seizing on B21A engines in the mid 1980s (fortunately non-interference engines) and both were due to blocked oilways. after clearing the oilways as described, I carefully scraped off the metal that had adhered to the camshaft where one of the bearings had seized and scraped off any high spots on the bearing surfaces on the cylinder head and bearing cap.
I then used some metal polish, Brasso, if memory serves me right, on the bearing and replacing the shaft and bearing caps, wound the shaft through a few turns to effectively lap the bearing surface. Since it was a non-interference engine you could do this without the valves hitting the pistons. I then cleaned off all the Brasso and put it all back together. I felt it was a bit of a bodge job but since we'd paid virtually nothing for the car I didn't feel it justified anything better. It ran quite happily for years afterwards. I did exactly the same with another car with similarly successful results. In each case the failure was due to poor servicing and probably cheap oil too. |

Bugjam1999 - Thanks for your comment. I'll have a look beneath the caps and get some pics when I have some time in daylight. Also thanks for your PM. The car's actually in Essex.
Mocambique & Martin - I'll take your advice on regular good quality oil changes. Should have done it on first purchase. Won't make that mistake again. But reassuring to read there may be hope. It's getting towed to a garage for a thorough inspection so fingers crossed. I'll update when I know more. |

As this is a later engine that is not prone to the blocked oil ways I am suspecting a oil pump issue rather than blocked oil ways. There is a bit of crud build up in the head but all the heads I have been with the cam seized have had a LOT worse tar build up in the head. For a 530 head (the type you have) to have done this then I would expect a very heavy build up of thick sludge in the head and it is just not there.
I would say you are looking at a low oil pressure problem |

Out of interest Dai- what, in your experience, might cause low oil pressure?
Not something I’ve heard of much with Volvo redblocks- but you have far, far more knowledge and experience than I do. Cheers |

Low oil pressure is fairly rare
a few cases of the seal failing between the pump and the feed pipe but only something you really see on engines that have been tampered with. oil pump blocked with tar deposits oil pump/oil ways blocked with instant gasket material. wrong oil filter/and or oil type in odd cases worn oil pump but you only see this on engines that have not been serviced |

At about 300,000 miles I did decide to remove the sump and check the oil pump, and found that the sleeve oil seal was not seating properly - it had obviously been poorly pressed over the pipe during original assembly. I did find the pump end float worn beyond spec, so ground down the face to restore that while I had access. Together they cured the problem, and the car went on to do 440,000 miles. By then it was burning oil a bit and kept failing the emissions test. If the car had been registed a year earlier it would have passed the earlier test easily and I'd probably still be using it. |
